REView - The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Bible, Robert J. Hutchinson

Amazon.com: The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Bible (Politically Incorrect Guides): Books: Robert J. Hutchinson.

Robert Hutchinson (Fuller Seminary grad) has written a book that defends the accuracy and powerful impact of the Bible in shaping Western culture.  The Bible is the number one bestseller of all time.  It’s believed by over 2 billion people to be the Word of God. Secularists and atheists will find several reasons to hate Hutchinson’s book.  But, those of us who are in the faith community may find it a helpful tool in defending the veracity and perspicuity of the Bible.  While I haven’t read the book yet, a friend emailed me the link and I like what I’ve read about it so far. (Hat Tip: DB)  I can’t wait to read it.  I’ve been beating this drum for years – there is no more influential book in human history than the B-I-B-L-E!

REVrant 30.5 - Former Pope in Flames?

Is this Pope John Paul II waving from beyond the grave? Vatican TV director says yes | the Daily Mail.

Look at the image in this link, and see what you think.

Is it just me, or do you find it strange that Catholics would find it comforting to see their deceased Pope waving to them from…FLAMES????

REVealed - Mountain Lion Warning

Mountain Lion Warning

We received this postcard in the mail from our Homeowner’s Association today!  It’s a warning regarding mountain lion sightings in our neighborhood – 13 sightings, in fact!

As you may (or may not) be able to read on the card, if we see a mountain lion, we are urged to call 911 immediately.  Apparently, there are several reports of missing pets, and the Division of Wildlife has concluded that they could have been prey for the mountain lion.  The WARNING is serious – “don’t let children play outside alone, don’t let them walk to and from the bus stop alone, be careful about biking, hiking or jogging alone!”

Mountain lionMountain Lion

There’s an obvious spiritual analogy in this.  Peter warns Christians in I Peter 5:8 – “Be self-controlled and alert.  Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

Truth be told, there are occasional “lion sightings” in church communities, as well.  We need to be alert.  We need to make sure we’re not trying to go it alone.  We need to protect the children.  And we need to remember that there is an enemy prowling around.

REVolting - Priest 'only pretending to be gay'

Priest 'only pretending to be gay' - CNN.com.

He was “pretending to be gay” as part of his research as a psychoanalyst?  They have the guy making homosexual advances on tape.  I’ve heard some lame excuses, but this one has to be near the top of the list.  No wonder respect for clergy is evaporating.

REVrant 30.4 - ..."In Sickness and in Health"

Last Monday night, my dear little wife mentioned that her throat was feeling a little sore.  Neither of us thought too much about it, until she woke up on Tuesday with a full-blown case of respiratory illness – coughing, fever, congestion, headache, body aches, sore throat, and eventually, laryngitis.  It’s been a miserable week for her.  She’s been “down” for the week.  I’ve done my best to care for her, amidst my unending responsibilities at the church and in life.

Here’s a partial summary of her week…

As I was preaching this weekend, I was reminded of my wedding vows to her – I said that I would remain committed to her and love her “in sickness and in health.”  I’ve kept that commitment for 34 years.  God has strengthened both of us, as she has cared for me in my times of sickness (six years of atrial fibrillation and eventual surgery in November 2003) and I’ve done my best to care for her.  When I was cooking dinner on Friday night (chicken piccata, mashed potatoes, green beans, and cherry pie – yes, I made it – for dessert), it occurred to me that I have no higher calling in life than to care for my wife.  She comes first.  Before the church, before my friends, before my hobbies, literally, before anyone or anything else…except of course, God!  I can’t tell you how that moment of awareness motivated me.  Rather than, “I HAVE to care for her in sickness and in health,” it felt far more like…”I GET to care for her!”

Please pray for her when you read this.  If she’s not improved by tomorrow, I think it’s time to see the doctor!

REVved - 3 - 0

Rockies Continue to Rock -MLB.

Torrealba

Game 3.  After Torrealba hit the homer, was there any doubt in anyone’s mind? They’ve won 20 of the last 21 and it appears that those holding up “Destiny” signs have it just right.

Rockies – 4

Diamondbacks – 1

Tomorrow night, the Rockies will clinch a World Series berth for the first time in franchise history.  I admit that I’m caught up in the mania.  (And I wore a purple tie and black suit this weekend because it was in “the rotation,” and I still haven’t “prayed” for the Rockies to win.)

REVved - 2 - 0

Rockies in Command: Rockies & MLB.

The score was 3–2.  It took 11 innings. The game was in Arizona, home turf for the Diamondbacks, who still can’t sell out a stadium for a playoff game.

The series record is:

Rockies -2

Diamondbacks – 0

Like I said, the Rockies are headed to their first World Series!

REVered - Saturday Hymn - "Take My Life and Let It Be"

While preparing for my weekend sermon, I ran across a story about Frances R. Havergal, the author of the well-known hymn, “Take My Life and Let It Be.”  Apparently, Havergal had quite an explosive temper.  As the story unfolds, she reaches a point where she was embarrassed and frustrated, concluding that she would likely have to live with her temper being out of control for the rest of her life.  But, the Lord sent her a verse that awakened her soul to the possibility of having victory over her anger.  She claimed it, and from that day forward, according to her sister, she never “lost her temper” again.  That’s what Paul would call, “freedom from sin!”

Click on the link and check out this familiar hymn – the tune will be a little different than most of you recognize, but the lyrics are all too familiar.  Classic hymn of the church…and hymn of sanctification!

Take My Life and Let It Be.

Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to Thee.
Take my moments and my days; let them flow in ceaseless praise.
Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of Thy love.
Take my feet, and let them be swift and beautiful for Thee.

Take my voice, and let me sing always, only, for my King.
Take my lips, and let them be filled with messages from Thee.
Take my silver and my gold; not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect, and use every power as Thou shalt choose.

Take my will, and make it Thine; it shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart, it is Thine own; it shall be Thy royal throne.
Take my love, my Lord, I pour at Thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself, and I will be ever, only, all for Thee.
