REVrant 32.3 - Huckabee Ad Delivers a Christmas Message...and Causes a Stir

Huckabee ad delivers a Christmas message - The Boston Globe.

Huckabee

By now, you’ve probably heard about and/or seen the new TV commercial featuring Presidential Candidate Mike Huckabee wishing people a “Merry Christmas.”  I love it.  But, oh the buzz it has caused!  Fellow Republican candidate Ron Paul mocked – he quoted Sinclair Lewis saying that "when fascism comes to this country, it will be wrapped in the flag, carrying a cross," then went on to tweak Huckabee for "using a cross like he is the only Christian, or implying that subtly."  (For the record, I believe Ron Paul is himself guilty of blaspheming a precious Christian symbol - the cross – by using this sleazy Sinclair Lewis quote and linking it to fascism.  How anyone can take this irreverent man seriously is beyond me.)

Huckabee cross

Two things seem to bother people: 1) Bookcase shelves in the background that form a white cross, and 2) Huckabee’s wish for a “Merry Christmas.”  I like how Huckabee joked about the idea of sending a subliminal message by referring to the old Beatles White Album urban legend – "I will confess this: If you play the spot backwards it says: 'Paul is dead. Paul is dead,' "

Let’s suppose for a moment that the cross was intentional – good for Huckabee.  He’s not afraid to identify with the cross of Jesus, the saving hope of every Christian on the planet.  And secondly, there’s nothing wrong with a Christian candidate wishing people, “Merry Christmas.”  There is no law, constitutional or other, that forbids the free expression of religion by any candidate for any office.  The government is restricted from passing laws regarding the “establishment of religion,” but Americans are free to worship and practice their religion as they please.  What applies to the people also applies to the President…and candidates for the office.

“Merry Christmas, Mike.”

The more I read and hear about Mike Huckabee, the more my primary vote leans toward him.

Sir, it would appear that you know little about the consistency that Dr. Paul has displayed over the years. He has lived out his faith quietly by remaining a light in a very dark place (D.C.) and keeping his word and oath. To call him irreverent because he quoted Sinclair Lewis is a bit narrow minded and quite judgmental. ANY person who claims that they are a follower of Jesus and then does not seek to live their life in consistent accordance to His calling and commandments to us, including supporting principles that affect our children and neighbors, is suspect at best in the seriousness of their claimed belief. I know and claim Jesus as my Savior from sin and death and follow him as my King yet I desire NO CONNECTION WHATSOEVER of my faith and beliefs with those of the "religious right" or "fundamentalist 'Christian' zealots" of this world who pervert the teachings of the Messiah in order to further their own view of politics and social order. If what these people support does not look like, or at the very least have some resemblance to, fascism, then I suggest it is time for the general populace to study up on what that word truly means. Ron Paul has consistently lived his allegiance to Jesus over the years without feeling the need to pander to the religious right and, in so doing, has continued to uphold his oath to the Constitution and to bettering this country for EVERYONE, not just Christians. I encourage you and everyone who reads my post to research for yourselves Dr. Paul's positions over the years and to ALSO research the opinions of our founding fathers (those we know were Christ followers) and see just how aligned their opinions and those of Dr. Paul's truly are.

People running for office do seem to become more religious in their comments as they start their campaign. So what do we have left but to try to compare their past ACTIONS to their present words? My personal view is that many in today's society who claim to be Christians seem to get Christ's message and guidance reversed. Christ was ultra conservative on conduct and ultra liberal on love, sharing, and compassion. (and I won't judge other people - that is God's territory- but I can judge their actions according to the words of Christ - false prophets, wolves in sheep's clothing). So for those who speak without knowing Christ, please remember that God created you and is always there for you. "Knock and it will be opened to you, seek and you will find it". Regards, jamesiii
