As you read the linked article, you’ll note that there seems to be a growing sense of helplessness and hopelessness in our society. Floods, tornadoes, global warming, gas prices, home values, air fares, college tuition, health care, and war – a partial list of the troubling realities that cloud the skies for millions of Americans. Only 17% of Americans think our country is headed in the right direction. The national mood is dark and depressive. The article uses a stinging phrase to describe the national psyche – “dour powerlessness.”
Reading the link turned my heart to a Biblical text that always comforts me. I hope it will do the same for you.
Psalm 46
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the sea, though it’s waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Come and see the works of the Lord, the desolations he has brought on the earth. He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear, he burns the shields with fire. As I survey the world scene, I can’t help but wonder whether the Lord is permitting all of these things in order to draw us to Him! Our Fortress!
Take some time when you read this to “BE STILL…and KNOW that HE is God.” And if you still need a little encouragement, perhaps a few lines from “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God,” would be in order!
The Lord is our shady tree as we encounter the heat of each and everyday...Personally, I would have given up all hope by now if I were not a believer in Christ. How can people cope without Him?? More reason to share the "good news" with those who are hopelessly lost.
